Winter mountaineering guiding and instruction is suitable for people with little or no prior experience of winter hill walking or climbing, who would like to progress to mountaineering in winter. Many of you may have some summer hillwalking and mountaineering experience. The aim will be to cover the many essential skills to operate independently in Scottish winter conditions.
For the vast majority of people I find myself mixing skills instruction in context combined with doing some carefully selected mountain days allowing us to put skills into practice moving through winter terrain. My aim being to make ascents of some of the finest routes in Lochaber subject to conditions.
Scotland is also home to some of the finest winter mountaineering routes or itinaries in the UK, with classic outings such as the Carn Mor Dearg Arete, Ledge Route, Curved Ridge and the Aonach Eagach bridging the gap between winter walking and winter climbing.
Winter Mountaineering in Lochaber
The steep valleys and fine ridge of the west coast of Scotland give some fine Winter Mountaineering routes of varied lengths, from small ridges and buttresses through to major ridge traverses. As a result Lochaber, and specifically Ben Nevis, Aonach Mor, The Grey Corries and Glen Coe are famous world wide.
