Equipment: Single pitch cragging kit and rope, packed lunch.
Details: This one day workshop gives an opportunity to review the statistics relating to single pitch climbing accidents in the Peak District. Over the duration of a morning this will allow us to highlight potential trends, and more importantly allow us to draw conclusion regarding what and how we teach leading at a single pitch crag.
An afternoon will be spent on the crag allowing us to consider some of the technical aspects of teaching leading and structuring sessions to address the areas of highest risk.
Practical sessions will be centred on those present but may well include the following:
- The selection of personal protective equipment for climbing. What are the significant injuries and can we mitigate them further?
- The structured teaching of core climbing skills.
- Small pitches and ‘big’ forces.
- Selection of ropes and systems.
- Equipment failure
- The balance between keeping clients ‘safe’ and preparing them for independent leading.
