Winter Climbing

Winter Climbing :: Snow, Ice and Mixed

Scotland is world famous for the quality of it's snow, ice and mixed climbing. This combined with a strong history, makes for a rich and rewarding winter climbing experience.

Winter climbing instruction, courses and guiding cater for the enthusiastic beginner as well as regular winter climbers who wish to push their grade or experience something new.

My winter climbing instruction, courses and guiding is all held in the Scottish Highlands. This world famous region offers a vast variety of mountain terrain on which many British mountaineers have learnt their craft. I choose to base myself on the west coast of Lochaber for the duration of the winter, this area includes Glen Coe, Ben Nevis and the outdoor capital of Scotland - Fort William.

All our Scottish winter instruction, guiding and courses require summer hillwalking experience and a good level of fitness. Mountain days in Scotland can be a long but worthwhile experience.

All winter climbing is arranged on a day to day basis, from one day through to two weeks maximum.  For full details check out the Booking & Prices page.  Below are some popular choices amongst previous clients:

Intro Winter Climbing:

Introductory winter climbing instruction might be just the thing if you have some experience of summer climbing/mountaineering and wish to make the transition to climbing in Scotland in winter.  In the past I have had the pleasure of climbing with lots of people using a couple of days instruction as a "spring board" to a successful winter climbing career.

Efficient movement is important in winter, so it probably doesn't come as a surprise that my aim will be to get you climbing confidently.  Other essential skills likely to be covered include ropework, belaying, and movement on snow, ice and mixed ground. In addition we would hope to take in some of Scotland's finest routes.

Duration: 2+ (2 or 5 days most popular). Location: Lochaber

Mixing it Up: Scottish Performance Mixed:

Every season I set a week aside to work with people specifically specifically interested in mixed climbing at grade III and upwards.  So if you are interested in the techniques for snowed up rock, hooking and torquing then this could be for you. The aim will be to do plenty of mixed climbing to challenge as well as consolidate at a grade that's suitable.

Duration: 5 days Location: Lochaber/Glen Coe

Cold Climbs :

If it's in the inspirational book “Cold Climbs” and in condition then it could be fair game. These guided days are all about classic routes and learning along the way.

Duration: 1+ days Location: Scotland - anywhere!

Advanced Winter Climbing:

This course is aimed at those who wish to progress to climbing steeper routes of grade IV and V. Again the emphasis will be to get you climbing confidently while teaching the essential skills of ropework, belays, and movement on steeper ice and mixed ground. As such we would hope to take in some of Scotlands finest routes at this grade.

Duration: 1+ days Location: Lochaber/Glen Coe/Cairngorms

Quotes
Just a short note to say a big thankyou for last week.  We had a brilliant time and Dave is quite grumpy today having to go back to work on Monday!
