Winter Mountaineering

Winter Mountaineering :: Summits with Skills

Many of Scotland's classic winter mountaineering days out are accessible to those who are prepared to operate in slightly more technical terrain. Winter mountaineering offers a unique challenge, blurring the traditional boundaries you will often find yourself operating in the entry level climbing grades.

If you are interested in ascending Scotlands classic ridges such as the Aonach Eagach, Curved Ridge, Ledge Route and Ben Nevis' Carn Mor Dearg arete this is probably the area for you.

All winter mountaineering is arranged on a day to day basis, from two days through to two weeks maximum.  For full details check out the Booking & Prices page.  Below are some popular choices amongst previous clients:

Winter Mountaineering:

Winter mountaineering instruction, guiding and courses are usually for people with little or no prior experience of winter hill walking or climbing, who would like to progress to mountaineering in winter. Many of you may have some summer hillwalking and mountaineering experience. The aim will be to cover the many essential skills to operate independently in Scottish winter conditions.

All courses will have a mix of skills instruction in context combined with time set aside for group centred days, allowing us to put skills into practice moving through winter terrain. My aim being to  make ascents of some of the finest routes in Lochaber subject to conditions.

Core subjects that are likely to be covered include: use of ice axe and crampons, safe route choice, avalanche evaluation, ropework, navigation and emergency snow shelters.

Duration: 2 and 5 days are popular options.  Location: Lochaber area
