Haglofs Magi Down Hood
Haglöfs uncompromising down jacket is billed as extremely warm, light and packable as well as being made from recycled material - I tried it out on Ama Dablam...
Haglöfs describe it as having a lightweight tear resistant and windproof shell fabric. Shorter cut ideal for low pack size balanced with the highest fill power Box wall construction to prevent cold spots whilst stabilising the premium 800 fill power goose down. Tri-Fusion® Eco synthetic insulation layer beneath down in the shoulders, mid sleeves, zip placket and lower hem to eliminate cold spots PFOS/PFOA free DWR treated surfaces.
Heading to Ama Dablam in the autumn of 2012 presented an ideal opportunity to try out the new Haglöfs Magi Down Hood.
Billed as their warmest down piece little did I know at the time that one of the coldest post monsoon seasons for ten years meant that I would definately need it..! In the end the Magi Down Hood was elevated from luxury item on the trail to an essential bit of clothing at Base Camp, and camps high on the mountain.
The first thing that grabbed my attention with this jacket was it's incredible loft, but relative lightweight - a testiment to it's simple no frills construction. Carefully thought out the elastic cuffs and the use of synthetic insulation combined with goose down resulted in a jacket devoid of the 'cold spots' that I had experienced before.
Two simple hand warmer pockets and a tried an tested hood design make for a simple but effective design. The one thing that is missing in my mind is a small net pocket on the inside to accommodate a 0.5 litre Nalgene bottle or similar - essential for keeping hygrated on summit day.
- Simple but brutally effective jacket for cold conditions
- Two simple handwarmer pockets and great sized hood.
- Elastic cuffs and hood make a neat finish without the need for velcro closures, and flaps of irritating fabric - all of which are harder to cope with in mitts at altitude or in cold conditions.
- A small inside net pocket would be a welcome addition.
